Constantin Brancusi (February 19, 1876 – March 16, 1957) was a Romanian sculptor who worked initially as a carpenter and stonemason. As a child he displayed an aptitude for carving wooden farm tools. Art studies took him to Bucharest and finally to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he settled in 1904. Among his early influences were included African as well as oriental art, and also Rodin was another early influence, but Brancusi decided to make much simpler work and started an evolutionary search for pure form. While never entirely rejecting the natural world, Brancusi undoubtedly succeeds in conveying a sense of gravity by reducing his work to a few basic elements. Paradoxically, this process also tends to highlight the complexity of thought that has gone into its making. Witness the studied serenity and distilled eroticism of Sleeping Muse, for example. In contrast to his many polished works in marble and bronze are his roughly hewn works in wood. Brancusi did much to encourage a revival of carving and great respect for an artist’s materials.[……….]

Studiile artistice l-au purtat la Bucuresti si in final la École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, unde s-a stabilit in 1904. Paradoxal, acest proces a accentuat complexitatea gandurilor care luau fiinta in creatiile sale. In contrast cu numeroasele sale lucrari slefuite in marmura sau bronz sunt lucrarile sale cioplite in lemn.
